Dog friendly cottages in Lincolnshire with hot tubs: the beach rules

Pet friendly accommodation is easy to find in Lincolnshire, but the beaches have rules that catch people out every summer. This is what East Lindsey District Council and the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust say.

• Skegness, Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea: dogs are banned from the Blue Flag stretches of beach from 1 May to 30 September, with fines of up to £1,000.
• Promenades: in those three towns, dogs stay on a lead on the promenade through the summer.
• Gibraltar Point: dogs stay on a short lead all year and aren't allowed on the beach or foreshore from 1 April to 1 September.
• Donna Nook: no dogs at all, and that includes the seal viewing area.

From October to April, the Blue Flag beaches are open to dogs again. Inland, the Round Louth trail is a good dog friendly walk, though some stiles are awkward for bigger dogs.

1. Lincoln Castle and Lincoln Cathedral

Walk through the gate of the castle William the Conqueror began in 1068 and you'll find an original 1215 Magna Carta, the Victorian Prison and the Medieval Wall Walk, though parts of the wall are shut for repairs. The cathedral is just across Castle Square.

2. Hubbard's Hills, Louth

As the last Ice Age ended, meltwater burst over a chalk ridge here. It gouged out a steep-sided valley about 38 metres deep. There's a café at the northern end, where the 2-mile Round Louth walk begins.

3. Woodhall Spa: the Kinema, the lido and the Water Rail Way

Calling all film fans! The Kinema in the Woods has shown films since 1922 and it's the only fully working cinema in the UK that still uses back projection.

Nearby, the 33-metre heated lido at Jubilee Park usually opens from mid-April to early October. For a bike ride, the Water Rail Way runs about 16 flat, mostly traffic-free miles between Woodhall Spa and Lincoln, following the old railway beside the River Witham.

4. Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Coningsby

Guided tours of the RAF hangar start from 10.30am and last 60 to 90 minutes, with the last one at 3.30pm from March to October and 3pm from November to February. You can't book ahead, so just turn up. Tattershall Castle stands next door, so pair the two.

The catch for 2026? The council says Lancaster PA474 is at Duxford for a major service until 2027, so ring 01522 782040 first.

5. Donna Nook seal colony (late October to early January)

Every winter, grey seals haul out between North Somercotes and Saltfleet to give birth, and over 2,000 pups arrive each year. From the viewing area, you'll see mothers feeding white-coated pups on the beach.

The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust opens the viewing area from dawn to dusk. The main car park on Marsh Lane (LN11 7PD) charges £5 a car. Weekends get very busy, so go on a weekday if you can.

When's the best time for a Lincolnshire hot tub break?

Honestly, a hot tub makes every season work.

Summer brings the lido, long light evenings on the decking and busy seaside towns. Autumn and winter are when the hot tub really earns its keep, with frosty Wolds mornings and the seal pups at Donna Nook. Spring is quieter still, as migrating birds stop at Gibraltar Point near Skegness.
