The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Steam trains run from Pickering to Goathland and Grosmont, and some go on to the coast, so check the timetable. Dogs travel on standard services for £3 each per day, says the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, on a short lead and off the seats.

Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Bempton Cliffs

Climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey for the clifftop ruins Bram Stoker wrote into Dracula, then walk the cliff path south towards Robin Hood's Bay. Down the coast past Filey, RSPB Bempton Cliffs has puffins nesting from April to mid July, and dogs on short leads can use the footpaths.

The city walls, the Minster and the Christmas market

Walk the walls, look up at the Minster and wander The Shambles. Then drive back for a hot soak. The York Christmas Market runs from 12 November to 21 December 2026 on Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square, 10.30am to 7pm, and it's closed on Tuesdays.

Holmfirth, Haworth and Hebden Bridge

Holmfirth is where the BBC filmed Last of the Summer Wine. You can still have a brew at Sid's Café before a 4.5 mile circular walk past the filming spots. Haworth's Brontë Parsonage Museum and the mill town of Hebden Bridge are easy days out too, though check the museum's opening days first.
